Robert Boyd (abt 1717-1782) was the son of George (1691 – 1731) and Isabella Boyd, who migrated from Ireland to Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Robert along with brothers John, Patrick, and James migrated from Lancaster to southern Virginia in the 1730's. The area at the time was part of Brunswick County (Later Halifax County). Their brother George, Jr. remained in Lancaster.

Two of the four brothers James and Robert would later move one county to the southeast to Granville County, North Carolina. The earliest deeds for Robert and his brother James found so far in Granville County were in 1752. Robert Boyd of Lunenburg County (soon to be Halifax Co, VA) bought 300 acres on a branch of the Tar River in 1752 (Deed Book B / 110). In 1757 Robert bought 200 acres on the Tar, three miles above the Trading Path (Old Indian Trading Path). Granville Connections Journal, Vol 12, #3, page 76, 2006 shows a Robert Boyd selling land along the Tar River to a John Boyd and a Thomas Boyd, which were names of two of his sons. A 1776 deed of his son Thomas (L/22) conveying 300 acres on both sides of the Tar, seems to indicate (in the memorandum) that Robert Boyd lived in the area.

Robert wrote his will in 1778 and it was proved in 1782. His will notes his wife as Lucretia (Lucretia was also on a 1778 deed (M/102)). Granville County has his probate estate of 30+ loose pages in a folder. Robert's eight children listed in his will were:
1. John – Reportedly would move to SC perhaps the Pendleton District.
2. Margaret
3. Mary
4. Thomas
5. Rachel – (died 1841) She would marry Mr. James Cannon. In the later stages of her life, Rachel would live with friends in Pickens County, SC.
6. Sarah
7. Robert (abt 1768-1851) would settle in Pendleton District / east Pickens County, SC.
8. Constance

It is not known where Robert was buried.
