He was the son of Wilhelm and Dorothea Grimm. Born 1828 in Kassel, he moved to Berlin 1841. In 1859 he married Gisela von Arnim (1827-1889), who came from a very philosophic family herself. In 1868 he became a Doctor in Leipzig and then in 1870 a Professor of Philosophy and Law in Berlin. He became a teaching professor for New Art History at the University of Berlin in 1873. In 1885 he became co-founder of the Goethe-Gesellschaft, and himself a publisher of some of Goethe's works. He lived his later live as a Buddhist and died in 1901 in Berlin.
