Following a private graveside service in Evergreen Cemetery in North Carrollton, a service celebrating her life will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church.

A native of Rapid City, S.D., she was born April 23, 1919, to the late Frank and Mary Faustina Moore Calhoon, and grew up on the Calhoon family ranch as one of eight children. She graduated from Lead High School in June 1937, and became a schoolteacher.

She later pursued of dream of becoming a nurse, and
graduated from the Johns Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing in Baltimore, Md., on Oct. 13, 1946. She continued her work at Johns Hopkins, where she became head nurse in the obstetrics ward. It was here that she met Hairston Reed Carroll, a young surgery resident from Rolling Fork.

They were married in Baltimore on May 29, 1948. Following his graduation, the couple moved to Greenwood, where they reared their six children, and where they resided for the rest of their lives.

In a memory book from a reunion of the Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, Mrs. Carroll described her career as a homemaker. She also stated that her activities and interests were reading, horseback riding, sewing and being a Bible teacher.

According to her family, she was the ultimate homemaker. She not only raised her six children to themselves become caring parents and professionals, but she also influenced the lives of many others through her community involvement.
As a Girl Scout leader, she impacted the lives of numerous young girls. Her active involvement and concern for the lives of young children continued as she served as a founding board member of the Boys and Girls Club, was a life member of the Greenwood Junior Auxiliary and served in leadership positions in the PTA of her children's schools.

The place closest to her heart, however, was First Presbyterian Church. Through the years, she taught Sunday School to a variety of age groups. She was president of the Presbyterian Women of the Church, and served regularly as a circle leader. She hosted numerous church gatherings at her family farm in Carrollton, and, for many years, honored the church choir in her home following its annual Christmas cantata. Her family says that she was a dedicated Christian who lived her faith.

Mrs. Carroll loved gardening, and was a member of the Greenwood Garden Club. She was an avid reader, and always looked forward to meetings of the Great Book Club. She shared her love of reading and her concern for others as a tutor in the adult literacy program.

Her grandchildren have lasting memories of her sharing her love and knowledge of horses with them. She spent many an afternoon at the family farm saddling a horse and teaching a grandchild to ride.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, Dr. Reed Carroll.

She is survived by all six of her children, Candace Carroll Coker and her husband, Bill, Kathleen Carroll Houpt and her husband, David, and Wilson Holmes Carroll, and his wife, Liz Blankenship Carroll, all of Jackson, Nancy Carroll Pittman and her husband, Claude, of Gulfport, David Calhoon Carroll of Santa Maria, Calif., and Virginia Lee Carroll Levine and her husband, Sam, of Nashville, Tenn.; 15 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be from 5 until 7 this evening at Wilson & Knight Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Boys and Girls Club or First Presbyterian Church in Greenwood.
