My 4th Great-Grandfather. Son of John & Margaret Manes (the alt. spelling is Means). Husband of Susanna Alice Van Kirk. Father to 5 children; John Pierce, Mary J., Samuel, Margaret A., and Joseph Van Kirk Means.

Culbert Manes one of the oldest and highly esteemed men of the county, died at his home in North Strabane Township on Sabbath last, of general debility, at the ripe old age of ninety one years. He was hte father of Mrs. Mary J. greer, who lives with her son Wesley, on the south side. Mr. Manes was born near Elizabeth, Allegheny county, in 1798, and lived there until 1839, when he moved with his family to North Strabane where he lived on the same farm until hsi deaht. He was a man of temperate habits and enjoyed the best of health all his life, and was never confined to his bed until his recent illness, which was caused by old age, and which resulted in his death. He walked around until a week before his death. Saturday evening he went to sleep and did not waken again, passing peacefully across the Jordan of death Sunday evening. He was the father of four children: John Manes of Linden, Mrs. Mary J. Greer, of the South Side, Mrs. Margaret Lyons, of Linden, and Joseph Manes of North Strabane, all of whom survive him. There wer fourteen grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren and seventeen great-great-grandchildren. Thirteen of the great-grandchildren were at his funeral.
