Lillie was the daughter of Andrew Jackson Gruver and Josephine V. V. Allen who were married in St Johns County, Florida on 17 June 1869. Her mother died before 8 Oct 1877 when her father remarried. She was apparently raised by her maternal grandparents as she is on the census with them twice. She married Alvin A Wells on 18 Nov 1885. They had one child that survived infancy.
