Abram was born in Smithville, NC which is today Southport. At the age of twenty-one he enlisted in Company C, 30th NC State Troops (Brunswick Double Quicks). During the Battle of Gaines' Mill, Abram was shot in the face. The ball passed through one cheek and out the other, taking with it part of the roof of the mouth. It was an injury that he suffered with the rest of his life. After a long healing process he returned to service for the rest of the war. After the war he went on to father twelve children.
