Sidney was the son of Bert Bivins Jr and Hester Newberry Bivins, the 2nd of their 7 children. He was educated in the Bibb County School System. He was drafted into the U. S. Army and served 20 years, including 2 tours in the Vietnam War, receiving several commendations, accolades and awards before his retirement with his Honorable Discharge. He had a passion for cooking and was employed with Fincher's Barbecue in Macon, Georgia as a teenager. He was blessed with a phenomenal voice and often sang with his brothers.

He married Betty Jean Bivins before leaving for the military, they had 2 children and later divorced. After retiring from the military, Sidney relocated to Fortaleza, Brazil, where he met and married Evania Parente De Paula Bivins. He was preceded in death by his youngest brother, Larry Bivins.

1 Son: Kenneth "Kenn" Christopher Bivins.
2 Sisters: Dr. Thelma Bivins Dillard and Shirley Ann Bivins Johnson.

6 Grandsons: Christopher Rousseau, Joshua Rousseau, Kenneth Bivins II, Terrell Battle, Spencer Bivins and Stephen Battle.
