Ethel M. Ellsworth Ormsby, 100, of Davenport, passed peacefully into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2007.
Celebration of life services will be 11 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, at First Baptist Church, 1401 Perry St., Davenport. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 31, at Weerts Funeral Home, Kimberly at Jersey Ridge, Davenport. Burial will be in Davenport Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church or Genesis Hospice.
Ethel was born in Princeton Township on Sept. 9, 1907, to Lewis and Nancy Jane Ellsworth. She graduated from Central High School in Davenport in 1926, and went on to teach school, including teaching all eight grades in a one-room schoolhouse. On July 10, 1934, Ethel married her beloved husband, Arthur Ormsby, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church in Davenport. They welcomed a daughter, Nancy, into their family in 1936. Art and Ethel lived in the Davenport area until retiring to Cherokee Village, Ark, in 1968. Art passed away on May 20, 1981, and two years later, Ethel returned to Davenport.
Ethel was an active member of First Baptist Church. She was involved in child evangelism, wrote devotionals for Dial-A-Devotion, and taught Sunday school for children and adults until 98 years of age. Ethel's life exemplified loving God and loving others. She had a strong faith, which was evident in every aspect of her life. She was an example and mentor to those around her for her entire life, even as she celebrated her 100th birthday. All who knew her were fortunate to have experienced her humor, support, encouragement, laughter and prayers.
Ethel M. Ormsby was loved by many and will be greatly missed.
Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and Wendell Cox, Davenport; grandchildren, Cindy (Terry) Powers, Michael (Jill) Cox, Timothy (Mary) Cox, and Amy (Vio) Cirje; nine great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, including nieces and dear friends, Betty (Mel) Dirksen and Lois Riexinger. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Art; "sister" and brother-in-law, Pearl and Lloyd Ormsby; and brother, Harvey.
