Robert Caton, Sr., born ABT 1720 in England, the son of John Caton, Sr. and Agnes Robert, was of Irish descent, and served in the English army before settling in Maryland.
He reportedly migrated from northern Ireland in early 1700's with two brothers-Thomas and Benjamin.
He was a prominent citizen of the colony, Maryland, long before the Revolution, and the name is a conspicuous one in Maryland society to-day. During the life of his second wife, he joined the Society of Friends, and became a preacher in that denomination. He married Penelopy Annitt Trippet Caton who was born in Bristol, England ABT 1740, and died 1771 , the daughter of John Trippett and Alice Sipple, his third wife being a member also. His four children by his third wife, according to the rules of that denomination, became birthright members, and was member of the society in good standing.
According to family legend, Robert Caton, Sr.'s sons, Robert Caton, Jr. and John joined the the Revolution in 1775, splitting from their parents who by this time owned a large plantation on the Potomac River and still favored the Crown.
