Marjorie B. West, 85, of Sarasota died April 17, 2012. Services will be at a later date. National Cremation and Burial Society is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include her daughters Deborah Proffitt of Gainesville and Ann Herbert of Columbia, Md.; sons Geoffrey and Scott Proffitt, both of Sarasota; sister Carolyn Smith of Norway, S.C.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Marjorie was active in local causes and politics for most of her life, from working on numerous campaigns to being elected President of the Civic League and President of the Taxpayer's Association of Sarasota County. Perhaps her most heartfelt efforts went to helping children in the Guardian Ad Litem program, a volunteer program representing abused, neglected or abandoned children in the juvenile court system.
