Sarah was born and raised on the homestead at Wauhatchie in the Lookout Mountain Valley in Tennessee. Her parents, Cavanaugh and Mary Boydston, settled in this area in 1829 where the Indians still lived. Sarah was an active member of the Primitive Baptist Church for sixty years. Sarah will be buried in the Boydston Cemetery. The land for the cemetery was donated by her father.
