Austin Arthur was born in County Mayo, near Castlebar, Ireland, in March of 1833. His parents are unknown. He came to the United States as a teenager, with siblings, possibly his mother, and his future wife, Catherine Conway and her mother, on the ship Wenhem, in the spring of 1850.
He married Catherine in Baltimore, Maryland, on the 29 of January in 1855.
His obituary states that he settled in Jordan, in Green County, by 1868. He was in Rock County first.
Austin served in the Civil War as a private in Company I, 44th Wisconsin Infantry.
He owned a farm in Jordan Township, but also worked at the factory over the hill, and walked to work every day. There was a cheese factory over the hill from their home.
Austin had suffered from a stroke the year before his death, but had recovered. He died of Apoplexy.
