Austin served in the Civil War as a private in Company I, 44th Wisconsin Infantry.
He owned a farm in Jordan Township, but also worked at the factory over the hill, and walked to work every day. There was a cheese factory over the hill from their home.
Austin had suffered from a stroke the year before his death, but had recovered. He died of Apoplexy.
