Daniel Robert (Bob) Kanney
age 87, of Massillon, devoted husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather passed away Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2011, following a brief illness. Bob was a generous and humble man who lived a happy and busy life. He enjoyed his lawn, flowers and football. He was privileged to be a teammate of the famous Paul Brown 1940 football season and played 1941 and 1942. Bob graduated from Washington High School in 1943. Bob proudly served his country, being drafted in January 1943 into the U.S. Army during World War II with the artillery battalion in Europe. He retired from the Norfolk and Southern Railroad (formerly Norfolk and Western) in 1983 as a supervisor, after 37 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel W. and Bess Kanney and daughter, Kay Kanney Unkefer.
He is survived by his loving wife, June (Rearick), having celebrated 64 years on Sept. 14; daughter, Karen Kanney of Massillon; son, Kim R. (Janice) Kanney of South Carolina; granddaughters, Rebekah Unkefer of Cuyahoga Falls, Megan (Allan) Lynch of Massillon, Jenny (Toby) Mathias of New Philadelphia; grandson, Jed (Amanda) Lindsay of Massillon; step-grandson, Drew Johnson of South Carolina; and four great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Bob was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Massillon, 50 year member Canton Masonic Lodge F&AM and former member of Elks.
Memorial Services will be held on Sunday, Oct. 9, 2011 at First United Methodist Church on Lincoln Way with Rev. Jeff Coggins officiating. Calling hours will begin at 1 p.m. and followed with service at 2 p.m. Interment will be at the convenience of the family.
