PHILIPPI, W.Va. - Charles "Chuck" Cather, 78, peacefully passed away on Friday September 17, 2021, surrounded by his family. Linda, his beloved wife of 50 happy years, held his hand while the angels took him home.
Chuck was born on April 29, 1943, in Clarksburg, WV, to the late William and Maxine Cather.
Charles grew up on the family farm on Berry Run Road in Flemington. After graduating as valedictorian of Flemington High School class of 1961, he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from WVU. He started his career at PPG in New Martinsville, where he met Linda and constantly made her laugh. He later worked for Consolidated Natural Gas/Dominion in Hastings and Clarksburg and had many coworkers turn into life-long friends. Chuck and Linda moved from Hastings to Bridgeport (1976) to Flemington (1990). They remodeled Chuck's grandparents' house, and enjoyed every bit of living at the farm.
Charles is survived by his loving wife, Linda Also surviving are sons, Butch and Steve Cather and daughter, Carrie (husband, Jim) Fick. Grandsons, Matthew and Owen Charles and granddaughters, Emily, Ruby and Mabel were the joys of his life. His dearly loved siblings, brother, Bill (wife, Brenda) and sister, Betsy (husband, Ed) also survive him, along with many nieces, nephews and close friends.
Playing golf with his best friend and brother, Bill and other golf buddies, Rudy, Mike and Harley, was one of his favorite hobbies. He also golfed and bowled in CNG/Dominion Gas leagues. As the grandkids started pouring in, his golfing days turned into days full of babysitting with Linda. Singing the kids to sleep was something that he did well. Visiting with his sister, Betsy and eating her delicious 'Mammaw cookies' and candy was something that he loved. As an avid WVU Mountaineer fan, he didn't miss watching many football or basketball games. Chuck made numerous picture frames, bookshelves, nightstands, cutting boards, homemade wooden birthday/anniversary cards for Linda, birdhouses and potato and onion bins in his garage woodworking shop. He gave these woodworking gifts to his family. The annual family potato-picking day was something he enjoyed. Truckloads full of potatoes were harvested by family members from the large potato patch on the hill. Every year, he enjoyed growing and picking JetStar tomatoes, green beans, cucumbers, corn and peppers from his garden. He made a good effort to have a fruit orchard in the backyard, where he still has some apple and pear trees remaining.
Just a few hours after his passing on a sunny day two of the most amazing rainbows appeared out of nowhere - one over Chuck's barn and one on I-79 on Carrie's way home. Charles went to a better place and we will meet him again. What a day that will be.
Family will receive friends at the Union Baptist Church, near Flemington, WV on Friday, September 24, 2021, from 10 am until 11 am. A graveside service will follow in the Simpson Cemetery at 11 am with Pastor Garry Whitescarver officiating. Interment will follow.
