She was born Jan. 10, 1931, in Binghamton, the daughter of Calvin and Wanda (Henderson) Holbert.
Romaine was a bartender and a bowler for many years and also enjoyed playing cards, backgammon and bingo.
Romaine was known for her kind heart and hospitality, never turning away anyone who was in need, and was affectionately called "Ma" by many. After retiring, Ma filled much of her time helping care for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, giving them "anything their little hearts desired," as she was often heard telling them.
She also developed an avid interest in the Yankees and followed them very closely.
Romaine is survived by her husband of 45 years, William R. Whitaker, of Hancock; son and daughter-in-law, Russell and Lynn Bass, Hancock; daughter, Lydia Todd, Starlight, Pa., daughter, Jamie Whitaker, Honesdale, Pa.; son and daughter-in-law, Arlu and Judy Whitaker, Unadilla, son and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Cheryl Whitaker, Hancock; three stepchildren, Michael Whitaker, Windsor, Cheryl Whitaker, Damascus, and Diane Kilmer, Mansfield, Ohio. Romaine is also survived by 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a sister, Norma Curtis.
A graveside service will be held in the Riverview Cemetery in Hancock at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 24, 2007, followed by a remembrance of her life at the Clubhouse at Fireman's Park. Refreshments will be provided by the Auxiliary. All are welcome to attend.
