David Beier, 56

Dillon - David Beier, professor of music at Western Montana College, died suddenly early Friday of a heart attack.

Dr. Beier served on the faculty of WMC since 1983, teaching courses in music and music education. From 1993 to 1996, he was dean of the faculty, the college's chief academic officer. He intended to retire at the end of this academic year, and continue to teach occasional courses for Western. His nomination for professor music emeritus had been submitted to the March agenda of the Board of Regents.

Beier was born in Newberg, Ore., April 7, 1942, to Herb and Fleda Beier. His mother died when he was young, and he was reared by his father and stepmother, Gwen Beier. He attended schools in Joseph, Ore., graduating from Joseph High School in 1960.

Beier graduated from Willamette University with a bachelor's degree in music education in 1964. In 1970 he received his master of music degree from the University of Oregon. In 1983 he earned his doctorate in music education, with supporting areas in conducting and music history from the University of Colorado.

Professor Beier began his career as a band teacher with three years in Clover Park School District in Tacoma, Wash., and continued with 12 years in the Dallas, Ore., School District. He served as a part-time instructor at the University of Colorado while working on his doctorate.

Beier founded the Dillon Men's Chorus, of which he was particularly proud, in 1994. The chorus has been rehearsing six week for its annual April concert. He served as musical director of the fall 1998 production of "Scrooge" at the college. He directed many mixed choral groups, college community bands and orchestra, and jazz ensembles, as well as assisting at regional high school music festivals.

On Aug. 19, 1974, he married Clara Walker. Together they moved to Dillon in 1983. Clara Beier is a professor of elementary education with emphasis in reading and literacy.

In addition to his wife Clara, David is survived by his brother, Donald Beier of Seattle; sister, Bev Jones of Gresham, Ore.; brother Bill Skaggs of Seattle; numerous nieces and nephews; and two great-nieces and one great-nephew.

A family graveside service is 11 a.m. Tuesday at Dillon's Mountain View Cemetery. A memorial service is 10 a.m. Friday, March 26, in the WMC Main Auditorium. A reception will immediately follow.
