"Mrs. Martha A. Shumate, 89, of 128 W. Sea, Independence, died Monday at the Independence Sanitarium. She was a lifelong area resident. Mrs. Shumate was a realtor for Jack King Realty, Independence, 17 years before she retired in 1973. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Independence and the Eastern Jackson County Board of Realtors and a former worthy matron of the Order of the Eastern Star. She leaves a son, Charles R. Shumate, and a daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Louise Conus, both of Dallas; two brothers, Parker Long of Creighton in Cass County and R. Keith Long of Kansas City; two sisters, Mrs. Esther Stewart of Lee's Summit and Mrs. Helen Ream of Grandview; two grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Mount Moriah Cemetery." The Kansas City Times, May 13, 1981
