"Charles B. Shumate, 83, of 128 W. Sea, Independence, died Monday at the Medical Center of Independence. He was born in Deepwater, Mo., and had lived in Independence most of his life. Mr. Shumate was a 38-year employee of the Amoco Sugar Creek Refinery before he retired 18 years ago. He was a member of the company's 20-year club. He was a member and deacon emeritus of the First Baptist Church of Independence. He leaves his wife, Mrs. Martha Shumate of the home; a son, Charles R. Shumate of Dallas, Tex.; a daughter, Mrs. Marjorie Conus of 1528 Belmont; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Ott & Mitchell Chapel, 509 S. Noland, Independence; burial in Mount Moriah Cemetery." The Kansas City Star, October 23, 1973
