Harold E. Whitten was born on a farm eight miles north of Phillipsburg on Jan. 9, 1906 to E.M. and Edith Whitten.
He attended a rural school and later attended Phillipsburg High School.
He was a Western Union operator until he contracted polio at the age of 22, after which he was forced to use crutches.
He managed to operate a motel in Phillipsburg for the last 25 years.
His outstanding characteristic was his courage in the face of seemingly overwhelming difficulties.
He joined the Methodist church with his parent in 1923.
He contracted cancer of the liver and God called him to Himself on Aug. 17, 1962 at the age of 56 years, 7 months and 8 days.
He is survived by his father E.M. Whitten and a sister, Ida, who is a school teacher in Racine, Wisc.
In the absence of Rev. Harold Nelson of the Methodist Church, Father James Letrim was called in for prayers during his last days.
Memorial services were held in the Olliff-Boeve Memorial Chapel at 9:00 a.m. on Aug. 18 with Father James Letrim officiating. Music was provided by Mrs. Frank Hahn and daughters, Linaya and Sherrill, accompanied by Margaret Jupe.
Pall bearers were Gerald Newell, Ralph Power, Lester Aubushon, T.E. Troyer, Garnett Tubbs and Roy Cummins.
Interment was in Fairview Cemetery.
