He was born March 14, 1942, to Edward Charles and Evelin Etta Bates in Seattle.
After graduating from high school, he took up work at the Port Townsend Paper mill.
His marriage to Gwen Hester gave him three sons. The marriage ended in divorce, and William never remarried.
He was a warm, loving and caring man who was great with his grandkids. He will be greatly missed.
William leaves behind his sons, Edward (Suzie) Bates, Ted Hutt and Virgil Hutt; and grandchildren Tia Bates, Samantha Bates, Jason Hutt and Jeffry Hutt.
He is preceded in death by his father, Edward Bates Sr.; and mother Evelin Bates.
At his request, there will be no public memorial services.
