Thelma Nichols was born on November 7, 1906 in Tennessee, the daughter of Idella Julia "Della" (Garrett) (Nichols) Adler (1880–1945) and her 1st husband James Hilliard Nichols (1878–1907), and the stepdaughter of William John "W J" Adler (1858–1930).
Living in Nashville, she was almost 4½ years old when she died of measles and pneumonia on February 16, 1911. Burial was on February 17th in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Nashville.
