Barbara A. (Applegate) Johnson, age 93, of Greenfield, passed away August 26, 2021 at her home. She was born in Indianapolis on February 6, 1928, to Bert and Rose (Hiday) Applegate. She graduated from Warren Central High School in 1946. Barbara married Thomas E. Johnson on November 21, 1947.
Barbara was a school bus driver for the Eastern Hancock School System for 22 years. She was also the best grandma for over 40 years. Mrs. Johnson was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She had been a member of the Nameless Creek Christian Church for 50 years, where she was a Sunday School teacher.
She enjoyed watching IU basketball games, Cincinnati Reds baseball games, and being with kids, especially her own family.
Barbara is survived by her husband of 73 years, Thomas E. Johnson of Greenfield;
son, Keith Johnson of Louisville, Kentucky; daughter, Cynthia Newman, and husband Mel, of New Palestine; grandchildren, Lloyd, Mel, Brooke, Eric, and wife Leah, Conner, and Maggie; 9 great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Johnson of Hobart; and numerous nephews, nieces, and beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her son, Kevin Johnson; her parents, Bert and Rose Applegate; and 5 brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 30, 2021, from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at Erlewein Mortuary, 1484 W. US Hwy. 40, Greenfield, IN 46140. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, August 31, 2021, at 11:00 a.m., also at the mortuary.
Pastor Don Billey will be officiating with Charissa Ramey assisting. Burial will follow at McCray Cemetery in Wilkinson, Indiana.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Nameless Creek Christian Church or to Suburban Hospice.
