Alexander was a passenger on the Submission, one of 22 ships that carried Quakers from England to America to settle in Pennsylvania. The ship left Liverpool on September 5, 1682 and arrived in America 58 days later.

Alexander was with his father, Randal Blackshaw, mother Allis (Burges) and six siblings. In the ship's log for October 2 the captain notes Alexander died at about 6 in the morning and his body put overboard around 9 AM. It was a day of an unusually lengthy log entry as there was a fierce storm that day which did lots of damage to the ship. (The log can be viewed online at several sites.)
