5667 Private A Belk, 1st Battalion the York and Lancaster Regiment. He deployed with his battalion to South Africa for the Second Anglo Boer War, sailing on the Majestic about 13 Dec 1899, arriving at the Cape about the 30 Dec 1899, and were at once sent round to Durban. Along with the 2nd Royal Lancaster Regiment, 2nd Lancashire Fusiliers, and 1st South Lancashire Regiment, they formed the 11th Brigade under Major General Woodgate. They fought at Venter's Spruit, chiefly on 20 Jan 1900, when they had 10 killed and about 100 wounded. The battalion was not on Spion Kop, but on that day they had about 10 men wounded. In the feint attack on Brakfontein on 5 Feb 1900 the battalion had 1 killed and 21 wounded. After Vaal Krantz the Lancashire Fusiliers and York and Lancaster remained at Frere and Springfield to protect the British left and rear but were brought back to the main army in time to take part in the battle of Tugela Heights (14-27 Feb 1900), the final and successful assault on the Boer position between the Tugela and Ladysmith. The battalion was part of the advance north into the Transvaal and was present at the taking of Botha's Pass and the battle of Alleman's Nek on 11 Jun 1900. For a time they guarded the railway, and then were chiefly employed about the north of Natal and the south-east of the Transvaal. Private Belk died of dysentery at 14 General Hospital, Newcastle, Natal aged 29 years. He is also commemorated on the York and Lancaster Regiment Boer War memorial in Weston Park Gardens, Western Bank, Sheffield, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/197997) and on the York and Lancaster Regiment Boer War memorial in York Minster, Deansgate, York, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/263179/).
