EDWARD S. GREW DEAD
Former Hub Merchant Dies in Manchester.
Sons are Prominent in Boston Social and Business Circles.
MANCHESTER, MASS. Jan. 20 — Edward Sturgis Grew, for many years active in the business life of Boston, died today at his summer home, "All Oaks," aged 74 years. He was born in Boston, the son of Henry and Elizabeth P. (Sturgis) Grew, and was graduated from Harvard in 1863.
For some years he was in the dry goods commission business with Frothingham & Co. of Boston, and in 1867 became Boston agent of A. T. Stewart & Co. of New York. Jan 1, 1872, he entered business for himself as a member of the dry goods commission firm of Gowing & Grew, Boston and New York, and 12 years later became a partner in the Boston firm of Lawrence & Co. He retired in 1887 and spent considerable time in travel.
Mr. Grew was a director of the Massachusetts National Bank and for years was treasurer of the Benevolent Fraternity of Churches and a member of the board of managers and secretary of the Boston Dispensary. He was a member of the Somerset Club, the Country Club, Essex County Club at Manchester and the Eastern Yacht Club at Marblehead Neck.
He was married at St. Paul's Church in Dedham, Nov. 26, 1867, to Miss Annie Crawford Clark, daughter of Joseph W. Clark of that town. The family home is at 185 Marlboro Street, Boston. Mr. Grew is survived by his wife and three sons, Randolph C. Grew of Boston, a member of the firm of Weld, Grew & Co; Henry S. Grew, president of the National Union Bank, and Joseph Clark Grew, who as been identified with the United States Diplomatic Service and is first secretary of the American Embassy in Berlin. He was a brother of the late Henry S. Grew of Boston.
