James Roy "Jim" Chapman of Hubbard, Texas, passed away on August 5, 2021, at the age of 93. Born on February 4, 1928, to Zelma Louise Broadway Chapman and James Earl Jefferson Chapman in Ranger, Texas, Mr. Chapman graduated as valedictorian at age 17 from Lampasas High School in 1945, entering the Navy less than a year later.
While in the service, Mr. Chapman was a part of the inaugural crew on the U.S.S. Manchester, training as an electrician and touring the far reaches of the world, including Egypt, Italy, France and Morocco. Upon his discharge, he moved on to college, ultimately earning a Bachelor's of Education from Baylor University, the first member of his family to obtain a higher education degree. While there he met his future wife, Royce June Crow, who coyly made the first move, telling Mr. Chapman, "If you have a nickel, I'll buy you a coke."
The two married on April 6, 1951, and were together for nearly 64 years until Royce's death in January 2015. The couple had four children, Kathy Sue Chapman Collins (Andrew "Ace" Collins), Karry Lou Chapman (Alisha Crumley), Karla Ann Chapman Smith (Steve Smith) and James Herbert "Herb" Chapman (Judi McAfee).
Mr. Chapman would go on to receive a Master's of Education from the University of Texas and spent 36 years working in public education, as a teacher, coach, PE instructor, bus driver, principal and superintendent. He had significant tenures in Llano, Refugio and Pleasanton as a high school principal and finished out his career as an elementary principal in Hubbard. After his retirement, he served for many years as an instructor for the Austin Driving School in Waco.
An active part of his community, Mr. Chapman was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hubbard, as well as a driver for the local chapter of Meals on Wheels. A lifelong woodworker and builder, various family, friends and community members have furniture built for them by Jim Chapman sitting in their homes.
Mr. Chapman most enjoyed spending time with his large family. In addition to his four children and their spouses, he is survived by his ten grandchildren: Clint Collins, Niccole Chapman Melgares (Zach Melgares), Rachel Chapman, Rance Collins, Stephen Chapman (Shannon Chapman), Jessica Chapman Thompson (Chuck Thompson), Aaron Smith, Collin Crumley, Holden Crumley and Weston Crumley.
He also had ten great-grandchildren and six nieces and nephews with whom he was very close.
Services for Mr. Chapman will be held at the First Baptist Church in Hubbard, Texas, at 3 p.m. on Sunday, August 8 with Rev. Ricky Woodall officiating. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. that same day.
Pallbearers will be Zach Melgares, Andy Collins, Stephen Smith, Stephen Chapman, Chuck Thompson and Bob Rulmyr.
Honorary pallbearers will be Rance Collins, Clint Collins, Aaron Smith, Collin Crumley, Holden Crumley and Weston Crumley.
