Merle D. Coleman, 94, of rural Hannibal, Missouri, died at 10:10 PM Monday at Maple Lawn Nursing Home. He was born July 13, 1916, in Philadelphia, Missouri, to Irvin and Audra Powell Coleman. Merle married Marjorie K. Sharkey on April 8, 1939, in Hannibal, MO, and she preceded him in death October 14, 2003. He is survived by sons: Merle Coleman, Jr. of Virginia Beach, VA; Gary Coleman of Palmyra; Kent (Susie) Coleman of Palmyra; daughters: Joy (Larry) Archie of Waldorf, MD; Dawn S. Coleman of Quincy, IL; grandchildren: Melissa Lanham, Matthew Coleman, Gary Coleman, Jr., John Coleman, Megan Riedenger, Tracy Sniscak, Scott Constable, Renee Constable, Stephanie Hoener, Chad Hoener, Rob Stanley, and Travis Coleman; brother, Lewis Coleman of Grand Junction, CO; sister, Shirley Million of Morton, IL, 15 great-grandchildren, 1 great great granddaughter. Merle was also preceded in death by a daughter, Gloria Constable, and sisters, Gladys Wilson and Mildred Sharkey.
Merle farmed for many years in rural Hannibal. He also was a repairman that could fix anything from appliances to radios and TVs. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, was an active member of Providence Baptist Church in Withers Mill, and had served as a 4-H leader. He was a graduate of Philadelphia, MO High School, and worked at CCC camps for two years as a young man.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM Saturday at the Providence Baptist Church in Withers Mill. Rev. Roger Freels will officiate. Interment will be in Grand View Burial Park in Hannibal, Missouri. Visitation will be from 5 to 8:00 PM Friday at Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel in Palmyra. Memorial contributions may be made to Providence Baptist Church . Casket Bearers are his grandsons: Gary Coleman, Jr., John Coleman, Scott Constable, Chad Hoener, Matthew Coleman, Travis Coleman, and Rob Stanley. Honorary Bearers are his granddaughters: Melissa Lanham, Megan Riedenger, Tracy Sniscak, Renee Constable, and Stephanie Hoener.
