Ray Lewis Doran was born in 1915 to Lewis Powell and Velma Maud Long Doran. He received his Bachelors Degree in 1936 from the University of Utah, and his Doctorate in Nuclear Physics from Purdue University in 1941. He was a Lieut. Colonel in the U.S. Air Force Reserves during World War II. He taught physics at the University of Utah for 23 years. He married Rhea Jensen on August 30, 1939, in Salt Lake City, Utah and became the father of four children, Linda, Sharon, Bryan, and Judy Doran. They later divorced. He married Elma Trebilcock on December 21, 1965 in Silver Bow, Montana.
