Obituary of Lois Merkley Walker

Lois Merkley Walker, 80, died Jan. 17, 2000 at her home in Naples City, with her children by her side. She was born in Vernal, Jan. 28,1919, the fourth child of Samuel Murray Merkley and Loretta Henry Merkley. She married our Dad, Asael Oscar Walker on April 10, 1935 in Duchesne.

They began their married life in humble circumstances on a small farm in Mountain Home. They later moved to Kamas and in 1945 moved to Vernal to raise their family of two girls and four boys. Mother loved the out doors where she and Dad spent many hours camping, fishing, hunting and scouring the hills for arrowheads. If there wasn't someone available to go on these excursions, she would often go by herself. Her favorite sport was bowling and she played on various teams until her health wouldn't allow her to continue.

She loved to garden, growing vegetables and flowers for all to enjoy. She was never happier than when her family and friends were with her, gathered around the kitchen table playing games or just visiting and sharing cherished moments. She also spent many hours crocheting treasured afghans for her grandchildren. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The six children born to this union were Lucille (deceased); Oscar Lee (Rae) Walker, Provo; Earl "Bill" Willis (Elaine) Walker, Middleburg, Fla.; Charles Allan (Flossie) Walker, Vernal; Sharon (Jean) Hatch, Vernal; and an infant son who passed aways shortly after birth. She has 21 grandchildren and 52 great grandchildren.

She is survived by two sisters, Grace Oaks, Naples, and Mary Price, Maeser. She was preceded in death by her husband, Asael Walker, two children, three brothers, two sisters and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Jan. 22 at 11 a.m. in the Naples 2nd Ward LDS Chapel, 2313 S. 1500 E. Friends may call Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Thomson's Vernal Mortuary and Saturday morning one hour prior to the services at the chapel.

Burial will be in the Jensen Cemetery in Jensen under the direction of Thomson's Vernal Mortuary.
