Fr. Alexis Anania was born on May 18, 1931, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and grew up in Our Lady Help of Christians Parish in the East Liberty neighborhood of Pittsburgh. He entered the Franciscan Minor Seminary at age 15, and, upon completing the province's formation program, was ordained a Franciscan priest in 1958.
His assignments included Christopher Columbus High School in Boston, Massachusetts; Our Lady Help of Christians Catholic Church in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; Serra Catholic High School in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, (where he taught Chemistry and Latin for thirty-five years and was much-loved); and, lastly, as Pastor of St. Pamphilus Catholic Church in the Beechview neighborhood in the South Hills of Pittsburgh for 20 years. In October 2018, when St. Pamphilus was merged with 4 other local churches into a grouping, he retired to Our Lady Comforter of the Afflicted Shrine in Youngstown, Ohio. In July 2019, the grouping of 5 churches became St. Teresa of Kolkata Parish.
Fr. Alexis Anania, OFM (Order of Friars Minor) passed to his eternal reward on Saturday, July 24, 2021, at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown, Ohio, at age 90. He had been hospitalized due to a heart attack and was in rehab when he was suddenly transferred back to the hospital where he died.
Visitation for Father Alexis was held on Thursday, July 29, 2021, from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. at Mount Alvernia Friary, 158 Delavergne Avenue, Wappingers Falls, NY 12590, followed by a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Mount Alvernia Friary on Friday, July 30, 2021, at 10:00 a.m. Internment followed at Mount Alvernia Friary Cemetery.
