171 Petty Officer (2nd Class) A Adrian, Natal Naval Volunteers. Volunteered for service during the Second Anglo Boer War. In October 1899 the Natal Naval Volunteers numbered 123 all ranks and were commanded by Commander G Tatum. The unit manned two Hotchkiss machine guns and one rifled muzzle-loading 9 pounder in Ladysmith, in Estcourt they had 15 men and one gun and in Colenso 30 men and two guns. The detachment in Ladysmith with their two 3-pounder Hotchkiss guns were part of the force at Caesar's Camp and Wagon Hill during the great attack by Boer forces on 6 Jan 1900. Petty Officer Adrian served from 29 Sep 1899 until his death from enteric fever at the Intombi Military Hospital, Ladysmith. He was buried in Intombi cemetery.
