Born Eldon Alfred Brittain on November 11, 1921 on the family farm north of Albia, Iowa, he was one of six children born to Alfred Tyra and Bertha Mae (Bain) Brittain. He attended school in Albia and Ottumwa areas, finishing eighth grade at High Point Country School in 1935. He went on to work the farm with his father, who was a share crop farmer his entire life. In 1938, Eldon and his cousin moved to Kansas City to find work. While they were looking for jobs, they lived with relatives and he carried out "klinkers" (ash in furnaces) to pay his $3.00 per month room and board. His first job in Kansas City was at Wilson Pack, where he worked for one year while also attending school for welding under the Public Works Program. He then worked at Standard Steel until World War II broke out in 1942. Eldon enlisted in the United States Navy, honorably serving his country for four years.
Upon his return, he was united in marriage to Cynthia "Arlene" Arnold. They moved back to Albia, living with his parents on the family farm. Eldon worked at Ford Garage in Blakesburg as an auto mechanic for two years. He and his brother then went into a partnership and began farming near Indianola, where he farmed for three years. Eldon, Arlene and their children then moved to a farm east of Haverhill, where he farmed for four years. Eldon then went on to work for Midwest Machine and Welding in Marshalltown. The family relocated to Marshalltown and Eldon eventually began working at Emerson - Fisher Controls. He worked there for 21 years, retiring in 1985. Arlene and Eldon divorced. He later married Ruby Lyle, who passed away in 2012. Eldon enjoyed wintering in Arizona for 20 years where he organized an outdoor shuffleboard court team, proudly winning the district competition three years in a row. He also enjoyed auto racing, renovating and reselling homes and his 3-wheeler motorcycle that he built himself and took to Sturgis. Those left to cherish his memory are his four children: Shirley Reed of Marshalltown, Nancy Posson of North Liberty, Michael Eldon of Marshalltown and Steven Ray of Marshalltown; grandchildren: Angie Crawford, Darren Mossman, Jennifer Briscoe, Heather (Joel) Bair, Jennifer (Chad) Witte, Kate Valadez, Sarah Brittain, Joey (Kim) Corns, Chris Brittain and Willy Brittain; his great-grandchildren: Ashley and Nicholas Briscoe, Adeline and Stella Bair, Summer and Jett Witte, Chloe, Elise and Audrina Valadez and Scarlett and Sylas Rhiner. In death, Eldon is reunited with his wife, Ruby; his parents, Alfred and Bertha; grandson, Kelly Samuels and his siblings
