Born on Nov. 3, 1912 in Premier, she was a daughter of the late Walter and Carrie Bauguess Mahaffey. She had been a lifelong resident of Bramwell. She was a member of the Bramwell Presbyterian Church where she served as Sunday School teacher for the Adult Women's class for many years. She was also an honorary member of the Bramwell Presbyterian Church Nursery Garten.
A graduate of Bramwell High School, she spent her early years working in sales, her first position was at Mill Creek Coal Company. She also worked with Bluefield Furniture and Wayne's Inc. of Bluefield. From 1958-1965, she and her husband operated the Corner Shop in downtown Bramwell. They touched the lives of many young people in the area as well as serving the community.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Londo Edward Gross Sr. -b. 2-26-1912 d. 12-1986; a son, Londo Edward 'L.E.' Gross Jr.-b. 9-18-1940 d. 12-4-1991; and three brothers, Mark, Verle, and Lawrence Mahaffey.
Survivors include: Daughter: Kay Gross Asbury of Glenwood Park, Princeton; two grandchildren: Kimberly Asbury Booberg and fiancé Brandon Homoth of Boston, Mass., Clay Asbury and wife Lisa of Richmond, Va.; one great granddaughter: Emma Katherine Asbury of Richmond; sister: Alma Mahaffey Anello of Bramwell; brother: Carlyle Mahaffey and wife Margaret of Harmony, N.C., formerly of Richlands, Va.; three nieces; several great nieces and nephews; and one great grand nephew.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Cravens-Shires Funeral Home Chapel in Bluewell with the Rev. Dale Compton and the Rev. Jim Goodwin officiating. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Bluewell where officers of the Bramwell Presbyterian Church will serve as pallbearers.
