4698 Private A Birchmore, 1st Battalion the Leicestershire Regiment. The Battalion was stationed at Glencoe, in the north of Natal, when the war broke out. It was part of the brigade of General Penn Symons, the other battalions being the 1st King's Royal Rifles, 1st Royal Irish Fusiliers, and 2nd Dublin Fusiliers. After initial clashes with Boer forces at Talana Hill, they withdrew to Ladysmith and fought at the battle of Lombard's Kop or Ladysmith on 30 Oct 1899 (24 casualties) before becoming part of the garrison throughout the siege. Private Birchmore died of enteric fever (typhoid) at the Intombi Military Hospital, Ladysmith. He is also commemorated on the Leicester Boer War memorial in the Town Hall Square, Junction of Every Street and Horsefair Street, Leicester, England (see: https://www.warmemorialsonline.org.uk/memorial/120536/).
