Verleen Howell-Retherford, age 89, passed away January 29, 2020. Born August 4, 1930 in Zumbrota, MN to Hugo and Vera Schroeder, she went on to work at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester where she met George P. Howell. They married in 1952 before moving to Minneapolis and ultimately made their home in Edina. Verleen raised four children and the family Golden Labrador, Webster. She was active in the choir at Mt. Zion Lutheran Church and in the Minneapolis Mrs. Jaycees, becoming President in 1961. She began working for the Edina Public School District in the late 1960s and held numerous positions until she retired at the age of 80. She is preceded in death by husband George P. Howell, partner Arthur Davies, and second husband Lt. Col. Robert Retherford. Verleen is survived by her brother Dr. Howard Schroeder; children Mary, William, Sarah, and Robert (Theresa) Howell; Bob Retherford's five children; grandchildren Marie and Radley Howell; and nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 14 at 11:00 at Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, W. 50th St. & Vernon Ave at Hwy 100. Visitation begins at 10:00 am.
