Thomas Edward Ball Sr, 69
How do we say goodbye to such a beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather and Friend?
How do we summarize a life of memories and accomplishments in just a few paragraphs?
It is with deep sadness that the family of Thomas Edward Ball Sr. have said goodbye for the last time. Thomas died at his home in Trout Lake, Mich., on Nov. 18, 2003, after a long and brave battle with cancer; he was 69 years old.
Thomas Ball was preceded in death by his father, Thomas James Ball, and his mother, Ethel Blanche Buhler. Those who are left to mourn include his wife of 47 years, Marjorie I. Ball; his six children and sons-and daughters-in-law.
He is also survived by sister and brother; uncles and aunts.
Tom shared a deep love of family with his wife, Marjorie, and his affection for his children and his grandchildren was evident in all that he did and said. The grandchildren will miss out on the fishing expeditions, the baseball coaching and the hugs.
Thomas Edward Ball was born on July 26, 1934, and was raised in Midland. He attended St. Bridgid's parochial and Midland High School, graduating in 1952. During his high school years he was a quarterback on the football team; he played basketball, baseball and was on the track team. He served in the U.S. Marine Corp. from 1953-1956.
He married Marjorie in 1956. He joined Michigan Bell Telephone Company in 1956. The family resided in Midland until 1973 when he was transferred to Petoskey, Mich. He retired from his job as switching supervisor for Michigan Bell in 1989.
He coached Little League baseball both in Sanford and Petoskey, was a member and past president of the Miller Van Winkle Chapter of Trout Unlimited and a life member of the Northern Michigan Hospital Auxiliary and past elder of First Presbyterian Church in Petoskey, Mich. Throughout his life he volunteered in many community, church and school activities.
Memorials may be sent to Hospice of Chippewa County, 125 Arlington St., Suite 16, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. 49783, or First Presbyterian Church, 501 E. Mitchell St., Petoskey, Mich. 49770.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 13, at the First United Methodist Church on Main Street (and Larkin Street) in downtown Midland.
