Alice Bobak, 91, of Ecumenical Retirement Community in Harrisburg, died peacefully on September 13, 2006 at the Jewish Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
Born February 28, 1915, in North Braddock, Allegheny County, she was the daughter of the late John Bobak and Mary Balas.
She was the sister of John Bobak of North Huntington, PA, Robert Bobak of Kingsman, Arizona, Paul Bobak of Pittsburgh, PA and Mrs. Anne Gordon of Waco, Texas. She is survived by her nieces and nephews.
Alice worked for the State of Pennsylvania for 42 years, first with the Pennsylvania State Police and then 37 years with the Board of Probation and Parole. She began as a file clerk and was a pioneer in the State's parole system first started in 1942.
Alice was known for her charity work. Alice volunteered for 13 years at her home church, Pine Street Presbyterian, at Downtown Daily Bread (DDB), a soup kitchen that ministers to the poor and homeless. At her church and in the community, she was known as the "penny lady" because she saved all of her pennies and loose change to give as a financial contribution to DDB. Over the years she gave more than $3,000 in loose change to this ministry. She volunteered at Dauphin Manor Nursing Home (now Spring Creek) and Harrisburg Hospital. In 1996, she received the Rotary Club of Harrisburg's "Service Above Self Award" for her charity work and service.
She was a Deacon and Elder at Pine Street Presbyterian Church. Alice was also a member of the Kabob Hiking Club and walked the entire Appalachian Trail, from Georgia to Maine. She organized a walking club at Ecumenical Retirement Community.
A viewing will be held on Wednesday, September 20th, from noon to 1 p.m., followed by the service at 1 p.m., at Neill Funeral Home, 3501 Derry Street, Harrisburg. Burial will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens at 4855 Londonderry Road, Harrisburg.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Pine Street Presbyterian Church, 310 N. 3rd Street, Harrisburg.
