John Buck, 80 entered his heavenly home on July 7, 2021 after a courageous seven-year battle with cancer. Celebration of Life services will be 10:00 A.M. Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at Mohr & Becker-Hunt Funeral Home in South Sioux City. Visitation will be Monday, July 12, 2021 from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. followed by a time of sharing memories of John. Burial will be at Omaha Valley Cemetery in Homer. John would like his services to be a celebration of his new life and casual dress is requested; No suits or ties and Husker apparel is welcome! John was born March 1, 1941, to Forrest and Hazel (Karsk) Buck in Sioux City, Iowa, graduated from South Sioux City High School in 1959 and was united in marriage to the love of his life, Irene Matney on July 29th, 1961. John and Irene were blessed with two children, Jon, and Joy.
John was employed by United Parcel Service for 11 years, first as a driver in Sioux City before serving as terminal manager in Ames, and Spencer, Iowa. John returned to South Sioux City in 1976 to work as a nursing home administrator. He received his Associates Degree in Long Term Health Care from Des Moines Area Community College in 1979 and spent the next 30 years in health care at several nursing homes, starting at Matney Westside Manor in Sioux City, and retiring from Elmwood Care Center in Onawa, Iowa. John's greatest love was spending time with his children and
grandchildren. Nothing compared to the times the entire family gathered together at their summer home in Okoboji. John and Irene also loved to travel, visiting most of the US. They enjoyed many family vacations with their kids and taking each of their grandchildren on an extended tour of East Coast historical sites. After his retirement John and Irene spent 5 years travelling the US in their RV. One winter they covered 22 states and 10,000 miles. In 2004, John and Irene began attending Sunnybrook Community Church. Though always a man of faith, his trust in God was ignited as he first began to see God through the lens of grace. His love for the Gospel was palpable every time he prayed. He had no fear of dying; he knew where he was going. John is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Irene, children Jon (Angela) Buck, of Hinton, and Joy (Chad) Steemken of Sioux City, grandchildren Katie (Corey) Engel of Bancroft, NE, Kenzie Buck of Toledo, OH, Eli Buck of Le Mars, Brianna (C.J.) Nolen of Sioux City, Kalleigh Rasmussen of Sioux City, Alec Rasmussen (fiancé Ashley) of Pittsburg, KS, Cheyenne Steemken of Sioux City, Tanner Steemken of Champaign, IL and Tucker Steemken of Sioux City, and 10 great-grandchildren. John and Irene are also proud to be the "adopted" parents of James and Mary Zieu and grandparents to their 4 children, Yako, Nya, Abi and Johnny (named after John), all of Rochester, MN. John is also survived by brother-in-law Bill Wayland of Camano Island, WA and sisters-in-law Sandy Buck of Council Bluffs, IA, and Jo Buck of Tucson, AZ. John was preceded in death by his parents, Forrest and Hazel Buck, sister Gayle Wayland, and brothers James Buck, and Keith Buck.
