He was a son of James McGuigan and Bridget Gormley. He married Gertrude M. Frederickson.

OBITUARY: Province 9 Jan 1961 p. 2. W.J. McGuigan. William Joseph McGuigan, 73, manager of the old city market and member of a pioneer Vancouver family, died Sunday. Mr. McGuigan was a nephew of Thomas McGuigan, Vancouver's first city clerk. Dr. W.J. McGuigan, Vancouver's first coroner and mayor in 1904 and a cousin of William Cardinal McGuigan of Toronto. He was appointed manager of the city market in 1932 and joined the city's land sales department when the market was abolished 10 years ago. Mr. McGuigan was known as the the diplomat of the city hall, being able to deal with irate property owners and send them off smiling after concluding satisfactory agreements in land sales. He took a keen interest in all civic affairs and built up one of the finest privately owned archives. Mr. McGuigan attended the old Mount Pleasant School and was a member of the Pioneers' Association. Before joining the city, he operated his own store and was in charge of purchasing for Kingsley Navigation Co. FAMILY: His wife, Gertrude; four sons, William, Vancouver; Robert, Nanaimo; James, North Vancouver; and Rev. Gerald, Vancouver; a brother, Thomas in California and 11 grandchildren. SERVICES: Requiem mass will be celebrated by his son in St. John the Apostle Church, Thirty-Ninth and Trafalger, Wednesday at 10 a.m. Burial will be in Mountain View Cemetery.
