1059 Rifleman A Benfield, 1st Battalion the King's Royal Rifle Corps. The Battalion was at Glencoe, Natal when the war broke out, and fought at the battle of Glencoe or Talana Hill on 20 Oct 1899 (18 killed and over 80 wounded) and at Lombard's Kop on 30 Oct 1899 (4 killed, 33 wounded). They were in Ladysmith throughout the siege and were holding Wagon Hill during the great attack by the Boers on 6 Jan 1900 (10 killed and 20 wounded). Rifleman Benfield died of enteric fever (typhoid) at the Intombi Hospital, Ladysmith. He was buried in the Intombi cemetery.
