DR. W. S. BOLTON
DIES AT HOSPITAL

Has Been Prominent In the Southwest
As a Cattleman for Years; Had
Interesting Career

Dr. William Stroud Bolton died at a
local hospital Tuesday afternoon. He
had been removed to a hospital from
his home at ?01 North Stanton street
in the morning. Death was sudden.
Dr. Bolton was a pioneer of the
Southwest and had been engaged in the
cattle business for many years. Born
in Galveston, Texas on May 25, 1859, he
later removed to Waco and then to
Hearne, Texas. He first came to El
Paso in January ?. He leaves no
relatives here, but a nephew W. D.
Lewis, a wealthy rancher, of Hearne,
Texas is expected to come here and
make arrangements for the funeral.
Although he was a graduate of the
Louisville Medical School, Dr. Bolton
had devoted but little of his time to the
practice of medicine until the Spanish-
American war when he went to the
Philippines as an army surgeon and
spent several years there in the field.
Dr. Bolton made one of the most sen-
sational escapes from the Juarez jail
that has ever been recorded. On April
? S. H. Cavitt, a cattleman, was
killed on comercio street, Juarez, fol-
lowing an argument about the purchase
of the Carretas ranch in Chihuahua,
? Grandes. Bolton & J. W. Clay-
ton were arrested and placed in the
Juarez jail. On December ? ?, Dr.
Bolton made his escape.
He had hit upon an ingenious plan.
A friend in El Paso went to New Or-
leans and purchased six United States
soldiers' uniforms. He returned to El
Paso donned uniforms and went to the
Juarez jail to visit the place. They
smuggled two uniforms in. Dr. Bolton
took one of these and walked out with-
out arousing any suspicion. Billy Da-
vis then a hack driver and now an
automobile chauffeur was waiting out-
side in a hack. Bolton got into it and
was driven to El Paso before the Mex-
ican authorities realized that they had
been tricked.
Clayton remained behind and was
sent to Chihuahua where he was later
paroled and amassed a fortune in min-
ing. Mayor ? of Juarez was re-
moved for allowing the escape of Bol-
ton.
Bolton then traveled considerably and
later returned to El Paso. At the last
meeting of the Pioneers' association
this year he joined that society, which
will probably have charge of the fu-
neral.
