George had been living with his mother Mary [Tucker] Chadeayne near Readstown, Wisconsin as her main support before he enlisted in Nov. 1861. He was either wounded or sick at the end of 1863 - beginning of 1864, was mustered out and died of disease at the end of Feb. 1864. His unit, Company C 18th WI Infantry (The BadAx Tigers, named for the former name of Vernon County) moved to winter quarters at Huntsville, Alabama in December 1863. George wasn't with them. He was last reported in good health March 1863.

The book "From Shiloh to Durham" outlines the service of Co. C 18th Wisc.

Captain N. M. Layne; Sergeant Samuel Swan; Sergeant
Thomas Fretwell; Corporal Samuel McMichael;
Corporal John B. Merrill; Privates: Levi E, Al-
len, George Chadeayne, .........."
