Dan was stationed in Arlington Virginia/Washington DC, from 1949-1952. After discharge from the Army, Dan held several jobs including working at Oshkosh Pure Ice, Diamond Match Co., and Appleton Coated Papers. He became a well-loved Mail Carrier at the Appleton Post Office in 1960 and worked there until his retirement in 1988. After retirement from the Post Office, Dan worked for Associated Bank in Neenah.
Dan married Lois M. Hidde on December 22, 1951. Dan and Lois raised four daughters in Appleton and welcomed many more children into their home over the course of their 55 year marriage. Dan loved working on computers, and his passion included e-mails and a Facebook page which he used to keep in touch with relatives and friends.
His loving wife Lois preceded Dan in his death. Dan is survived by four daughters: Candy (Chris) Reichelt, Penny Stenson, Laurie Stenson, and Patti Stenson, six grandchildren; Nicole (Fred) Tihlarik, Chad (Jaime) Reichelt, Craig (Shawna) Reichelt, Ryan Wittman, Heather Wittman, and Chas Van Handel; and six great grandchildren; Bradly, Aaliyah, Cooper, Reese, Nealy and Leela. Dan is further survived by a brother Bob Stenson, brothers and sisters in laws, Bonnie, Don (Mary Etta), Orval (Vinnetta), Howard (Margo) Hidde, Gloria Stenson and many cherished nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
True to the end his last thoughts were for his "girls". He told us it would be OK, and although it was difficult for him to breath he managed to sing "Happy trails to you, until we meet again", his final gift to us.
Dan's great sense of humor and quick wit will be forever missed. Love you dad, love you grampa!
A memorial service will be held at 6:00pm, on Tuesday, April 2, 2012 at Valley Funeral Home, 2211 N. Richmond St, Appleton. Visitation will be held from 4:00pm until the time of service at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
"We do not need to grieve for the dead. Why should we grieve for them? They are now in a place where there is no more shadow, darkness, loneliness, isolation or pain. They are home. They are with God from whom they came."
