Frances Hayter Copeland, age 100, passed away Sunday, June 27, 2021, in Graham, Texas. Family visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 2, 2021, at Lunn Funeral Home in Olney. Funeral services will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 3, 2021, at the First United Methodist Church in Olney with Rev. Lewis Holland, pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Miami, Texas, officiating. Interment will follow at the Megargel Cemetery in Megargel, Texas. Arrangements are under the direction of Lunn Funeral Home of Olney.
Frances was born at her family's home in Westover, Texas on May 16, 1921, to the late William Oler Alexander and Mollie Mae (Brinkley) Alexander, the firstborn of seven children. She grew up in Westover and graduated in 1939 as valedictorian of her class. She then attended North Texas State Teachers College in Denton where she majored in home economics and minored in English. She taught at Ingleside School for one year and returned to NTSTC and received her BA in Vocational Home Economics. She began teaching at Megargel in the Fall of 1943, teaching Home Economics and High School English. She married William Madison (W.M.) Hayter on March 12, 1944 in Megargel. After living in Elbert and Olney, they eventually built a home in Megargel. In the 60's, Frances was the Ladies State Champion in Texas three years in a row in trap shooting. She qualified for the guns and ammo team and went to Grand American in Vandalia, Ohio to participate. She shot in the Champion of Champions Shoot as a trap shooter. She was known to out-shoot her husband and son. The safest place to stand was usually behind her. W.M. preceded her in death on December 27, 1971. She belonged to the Wally Bryan Caravan Club International Texas/Big Country unit, serving as president in the mid 70's. She traveled all over the USA and Canada, six years pulling her trailer by herself. She married Harold Copeland on November 1, 1978 in Azle, Texas. They lived in Megargel until 1985 when they built a house just outside of Olney on the Newcastle Highway. She worked alongside Harold and his partners at the Olney Sale Barn where she was office Manager from 1986 to 1993. Harold preceded her in death on September 17, 2008. Frances was a member of the First United Methodist Church and was a member of the ladies quilting group. She was a member of the Hamilton Hospital Ladies Auxiliary for over twenty years. Frances was an avid golfer, enjoyed water skiing and growing flowers and gardening. She was also a caregiver and truly enjoyed serving others.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her two husbands; five sisters: Marjorie Farr, Glenda Potter, Doris Richardson, Bobbie Bishop, Betty Williams; her brother, Bill Alexander; and four grandchildren: LeAnn Hargis, Jeremey Nix, William Carl Keller and Dajuana Kay (Kayse) Calvin Champion.
Frances is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Gayle Hayter of Megargel; daughter, Francene Copeland Lisle of Edmond, Oklahoma; five grandchildren: Chuck and Barbara Calvin of Olney, Rhonda Fowler and Terry Wilson of Megargel, Scot and Terri Hayter of Megargel, Amanda Nix of Edmond, Oklahoma, Adam and Pam Lisle of Olney; ten great-grandchildren: Josh and Caitlyn Hayter, Riley Joe Nix, Brady Lisle, Ryder Lisle, Jessica Hayter, Michelle Johnson, Devon Fowler, Savannah King, Jerry and Carol Hargis, Tiffany Fowler; seven great-great-grandchildren: Dean Johnson, Whitney Johnson, Savannah Rose Bentley, Wyatt King, Pace Hargis, Palmer Hargis, Hayley King and numerous nieces and nephews.
