Rachel Hurtt, the daughter of Peter & Mary Garris was born March 4, 1841 and departed this life January 28, 1921, aged 79 years, 10 months, and 24 days.
She was united in marriage to William Adams in January 1859, who was killed in the battle of Atlanta in the conflict between the North and the South.
She was married to Jno. W. Hurtt, December 25, 1865 who proceeded her to The Great Beyond 34 years ago.

In early life she united with the Methodist church, but during the declining years of her life was deprived of attending the service that she so greatly enjoyed. She proved faithful and true to the trust placed in her, and to friends who had been with her in her last years she often spoke of being ready to meet Him, whose summons we all answer after our brief work in this world is done.
The following children are left to mourn the loss of a devoted mother: Harvey Adams of Clarksburg, Chas. Hurtt of Clarksburg, Mrs. Emma Baird of near Frankfort and Mrs. Jennie McCollister of Dayton, besides 16 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren, and a host of friends who feel that their loss is her eternal gain.

Rev. J.H. Ludlow conducted the funeral services from the Clarksburg M. E. church Sunday at 10 o'clock. Burial was made at Brown's Chapel Cemetery.

To all who in any way assisted us during the illness and after the death of our beloved mother, we extend our heartfelt appreciation.
