He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years Norma (Drewel) Garver, Son-in-law Terry Ward, daughter Ruth Garver Ward, Grandson Seth Ponzer, brothers Everett, Leo, Leslie and Delmar, and sisters Celeste Newton and Berniece Drewel. He is survived by his son, David Garver of Rolla, and many nieces and nephews.
August was a graduate of John F. Hodge High School in St. James and was a proud Army Veteran and member of the local Korean Veterans Chapter as well as a member of St. James American Legion #607.
After military service, he worked as a mechanic prior to furthering his education. He received top honors at Central Christian (now Oklahoma Christian) and at Harding College (now University) prior to graduate studies at MO School of Mines (S&T), University of AR and Michigan State.
As Professor Emeritus of Mathematics & Statistics, August enjoyed a career filled with distinction including numerous Outstanding Teacher awards, a Distinguished Teaching Award from the Mathematical Association of America and recognition by the National Association of Math Educators. He served as the Freshman & Transfer Student Advisor and developed the Trigonometry Review to properly place incoming students. For 22 years August also played a key role in the Minority Engineering Program. Years after graduation, former students would often send notes of thanks for his encouragement; many accompanied with news articles of their successes or books they had written. He was listed in a 1996 Alumnus Magazine article among "Teachers who made a Difference".
August loved his church family and was honored to serve as an Elder for many years for the Rolla Church of Christ where he had been a member since 1959.
