The Rev. Ralph J. Stoeckle, 84, of Ft Thomas, attended St Vincent de Paul Church as a child growing up in South Newport. He went back to his home parish as Pastor in 1954.
Father Stoeckle, died Friday, May 4, 1990 at his home in Ft Thomas. "When he went to St Vincent de Paul as pastor, there was only the foundation for a church", said Father Leo Schmidt, who was associate pastor at the church for 6 years.
"The foundation had been there for a long time. It was under Father's leadership that the present church was built"
The church was dedicated in 1960. Father Stoeckle served as pastor until he retired in 1979.
Father Stoeckle was ordained June 10, 1933 at St Mary's Cathedral, Covington, by Bishop Francis W. Howard. He was associate pastor at St Paul Church, Lexington; St Peter & Paul Church, California; and St Aloysius, Covington.
From 1949 to 1954, he was associate pastor with residence at St. Agnes Chapel. He was chaplain at the Catholic Order of Foresters from 1947 to 1950 at St Aloysius Court No. 1315. He was on the faculty at Notre Dame Academy, Park Hills, from 1952 to 1954.
"Father was a very organized person in the way he ran the parish and was dedicated to helping the people to bring them closer to God." said Father Schmidt, who now serves as pastor of St Stephen Church in Newport.
Survivors include a sister, Mary Manley of Ft Thomas; and several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 am Tuesday, May 8, 1990 at St Vincent de Paul Church. Transferral of the body will be at 4 pm Monday followed by visitation until 8 pm at the church. Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in St Stephen Cemetery, Ft Thomas.
