Sonja Cleon Winchester Cantu, 76, of Allenville, passed away, 7:38 p.m. Tuesday, May 4, 2021, at her home in Allenville.

Graveside services will be held 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 14, 2021 at French Cemetery, Allenville. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church in Sullivan or to the donor's choice. McMullin-Young Funeral Home is in care of the arrangements.

Sonja was born on July 21, 1944, to Leon and Beatrice (Abbott) Winchester of Allenville. She was a graduate of the Allenville Public School and Sullivan High School. Her husband, Jesus "Jesse" Cantu, preceded her in death.

She was a former employee of General Electric in Mattoon. As her parents' only child, she was their faithful care-giver in their declining years.

She was a lifetime member of the First United Methodist Church, first in Allenville and then Sullivan. Her strong soprano voice added strength to the choir and congregational singing. Her love of animals was known to all, and she cared deeply for her friends, which was expressed in frequent acts of kindness to them.
She is survived by several cousin.

Sonja was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

She was very grateful to the doctors and staff at the Sarah Bush Lincoln Cancer Center in Mattoon, who helped her through her difficult final illness.
