Obituary - Cedar Rapids Gazette - November 8, 2001
Capt. Ervin L. Ames, 59, of Bartlett, Tenn., formerly of Clermont, died of acute leukemia Monday, July 9, 2001 in St. Francis Hospital, Memphis, Tenn. Memorial services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, Ascension Lutheran Church, 2210 Grand Ave., Marion, by the Rev. Linda Livingston. Burial: Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion, with military graveside services by American Legion Post 298, Marion.
He is survived by three brothers, Alton and Vernon, both of Marion, and Robert of LaCrosse, Wis., three sisters, Jean Sindelar and Arlene Wilson, both of Cedar Rapids, and Doris Egbert f Kansas City, Mo.; and his special cats, Colonel and Miss Maggie.
Capt. Ames was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Ella Ames; a sister, Shirley Kabela; a niece, Anne and husband Dan Hamilton; and a nephew, Tommy Ames.
He was born March 21, 1942, in West Union, and graduated from Valley High School in 1960. Capt. Ames enlisted in the Navy, serving from 1960 to 1964 and again from 1970 to 1995, when he was stationed in numerous places including Guam, Vietnam and the Philippines. He graduated from St. Vincent's School of Nursing, Sioux City in 1970 ad from California State University, Los Angeles, in 1979. Upon his retirement from the Navy in 1995, he was employed as night supervisor at St. Francis Hospital, Memphis, and at the time of his death, was employed part-time at Methodist Medical Center, Winchester and Cordova, Tenn.
Capt. Ames received the Vietnam Service Medal and Navy Achievement Medal in 1971. He later received the Navy Commendation Medal and Unit Commendation, Meritorious Medal in 1992.
He was dearly loved by all his family, his Navy family and co-workers. We will all miss his sense of humor and love of life.
