Judge Lester J. Shipley, 74, of Westminster, died Monday evening at Carroll County General Hospital after an extended illness.
Born in Carroll County, he was the son of the late John A. and Bertie Alexander Shipley.
He is survived by wife Catherine Haines; daughter Carolyn J. Bowen of Westminster; brothers Rodger F. of Westminster and Ralph L. of Riviera Beach; and three grandchildren.
A member of the Clearfield Bible Church, he was retired from Western Maryland Railroad. He was also a member of Virtue Lodge 46 AF&AM; 32nd degree Scottish Right, Baltimore; Boumi Temple Shrine Club, Baltimore; Western Maryland Shrine Club, Westminster; Bee Hive Club, Westminster; Westminster Elk Lodge No. 2277; Littlestown Eagles No. 2226; Hanover Moose Lodge and Oldtimers Baseball Club.
He was appointed judge of the Orphans Court in 1976 by then Gov. Marvin Mandel and was elected to second term last November.
Funeral services will be Thursday at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Dr. Frederick P. Eckhardt, pastor of Grace Lutheran Church, officiating. The family will receive friends at Thomas D. Fletcher & Son Funeral Home in Westminster 7-9 tonight and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.
Masonic services will be Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
